For your first time, you don’t need any equipment or experience. Rental go-kart tracks provide the kart, helmet, instructions, and a safety briefing. Just bring comfortable clothes, closed shoes, and an open mind.
If you want a more guided start, some tracks also offer lessons or beginner classes, and sometimes even two-seat karts where instructors sit beside children.
Go-karting can be enjoyed by beginners and kids, but it’s still a form of motorsport – and with any motorsport, there is always some level of risk. Reputable rental tracks help reduce these risks by providing safety briefings, protective gear, and speed-limited karts for newcomers. Still, drivers should always stay mindful, follow all instructions, drive within their abilities, and be courteous to others on track.
Choosing beginner sessions (or racing with other first-timers) can also make the experience safer and more comfortable while you build confidence and sharpen your skills. For kids, look for junior sessions where children drive with others their age and speed level – safer and more confidence-building.
Beginner karts are fun and quick, but controlled for safety. They’re designed to be stable, predictable, and safe for all skill levels. Speeds vary by track, but indoor and outdoor rentals offer a great first step to learn the basics before trying anything more powerful. For details about top speed and horsepower of each kart please consult your local track for further information.
Rental go-kart sessions are usually affordable and priced per 8–15-minute session. Costs vary by region and track, but karting for beginners is generally in the range of a typical family activity.
If you catch the “racing bug,” beginner classes, coaching sessions, or small leagues are available at many tracks and are still relatively affordable compared to owning a kart.
No. For leisure / rental karting with family or friends, you simply visit a rental go-kart track. The venue provides everything you need for your first laps. You don’t need any equipment or prior experience to get started.
Most people start with rental karting for months or even years, as it’s flexible, low-cost, and lets you learn the basics before making bigger decisions.
If you later decide you want a more competitive approach without owning your own kart, Arrive & Drive club racing can be the perfect next step. It allows you to join organized races while the track provides the high-performance kart and technical support.
If you want more than casual laps with friends, you have two realistic paths:
1. Arrive & Drive club racing: It means that a local club offers high-performance karts, guidance as well as structured races – all without the commitment of owning a kart. This is great for learning racecraft, competing fairly, and gaining valuable seat time in a relatively affordable setting.
2. Owning your kart is the best approach when you want full control over your practice time and setup. You can choose either traditional 2-stroke combustion engines – especially if you enjoy mechanics or have support – or opt for a lower maintenance yet powerful electric kart.
Many drivers rent for a while, try Arrive & Drive, then buy a kart once they know their budget, time commitment, and goals. Regardless of the path, always start to race locally, and then move into higher levels once you're ready.
You're not alone – most karting beginners feel lost at first, as there are many options to choose from. A simple three-step process works best:
1. Visit your local track (indoor or outdoor)
Rent a kart, ask questions, try a beginner session.
2. Talk to staff or experienced drivers
Most racers will be happy to share advice.
3. Decide what excites you
Just for fun → keep renting
Want competition → Arrive & Drive leagues
Want full control → Owning a kart later
Karting is a sport that you can start at any age. Adults have the advantage of discipline, maturity, and usually the ability to self-fund. But it sure is physically demanding. There are different categories in karting that caver different age groups, so no matter how old you are you will always fit in one of the age groups. Our community's go-to recommendation would be to begin on a local level, buy some used equipment that is not expensive to same some money, prioritize physical training and endurance, focus on learning the lines and setup of the kart.
And a bonus tip: Connecting with someone who already has some experience will make your life so much easier.
Every champion starts with a solid foundation. If you’re aiming for the top, the best way is to start in entry-level categories – like the Rotax E10 electric kart or Micro MAX combustion engine – to develop your racecraft before moving up the ladder.
Professional racing requires immense dedication, practice, and patience. At higher levels of competition, we recommend joining a professional racing team. They handle the logistics and equipment transport while providing the technical expertise and driver coaching needed to sharpen your competitive edge. Success isn't built overnight, but with the right support, the path to the top is clear.
Absolutely! Most of our partner tracks are beginner-friendly and offer rental karts, introductory courses, and training sessions. We recommend checking the venue’s official calendar before visiting to confirm "Open Practice" or "Karting Days," as many tracks also host motorcycle-only events where karts are not permitted.
If you are just starting out, your local Rotax distributor is your best resource. They can provide expert advice, point you toward reputable rental programs, and help you find the right training academy to begin your journey safely and competitively.
